A 5-year-old girl became the world's youngest patient to undergo awake brain surgery at AIIMS. The procedure, known as awake craniotomy, was performed to remove a tumor in the left side of her brain near the speech/language area. Awake craniotomy is a neurosurgical procedure where the patient is kept awake and responsive to monitor critical brain functions. The surgery was successful, and the girl, who is a first standard student, even identified a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the procedure. She is now recovering and will be discharged soon, AIIMS said.
