Former AIIMS Director on COVID JN.1 variant
GeneralThe first case of the JN.1 variant was reported in Kerala, leading to increased testing and surveillance. The variant has now spread to several countries and is responsible for a significant number of COVID-19 cases in the US. It is more transmissible but does not cause severe infections or hospitalizations. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOI) from the parent lineage BA.2. As for vaccines, an additional dose is recommended for individuals aged 60 and above with comorbidities or suppressed immunity.
