The first case of the JN.1 variant was reported in Kerala, leading to increased testing and surveillance. The variant has now spread to several countries and is responsible for a significant number of COVID-19 cases in the US. It is more transmissible but does not cause severe infections or hospitalizations. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOI) from the parent lineage BA.2. As for vaccines, an additional dose is recommended for individuals aged 60 and above with comorbidities or suppressed immunity.
